Atwater, Merced County
Atwater is named for Marshall Atwater, a wheat farmer whose land the railroad crossed in the 1870s, and it incorporated in 1922. Castle Air Force Base trained bomber crews beside the town from 1941 until 1995. The Castle Air Museum, at the old gate, displays about eighty military aircraft outdoors, including a B-36, a B-52 and an SR-71 Blackbird.
